Discover the enchanting world of traditional Russian folk clay toys in this 10-week hands-on ceramics course. Inspired by the vibrant styles of Romanov, Abashev, Somov, and other regional folk traditions, students will learn to sculpt, decorate, and paint whimsical clay figures that celebrate history, storytelling, and cultural heritage.
Each week, students will explore a different aspect of Russian folk toy design - from simple hand-built forms and characteristic shapes to bold patterns, bright colors, and symbolic motifs. Through guided demonstrations and individual practice, participants will create a variety of figures such as birds, horses, musicians, animals, and stylized human characters.
In addition to developing strong ceramic hand-building skills, students will gain an understanding of the cultural meaning behind these iconic toys and how clay art has connected communities for centuries. The course blends tradition with creativity, allowing each student to develop their own style while honoring classic Russian folk aesthetics.
By the end of the course, students will have a small collection of completed folk toys, painted and fired, as well as a deeper appreciation for cultural craftsmanship and playful ceramic sculpture.
